  • Little or no urine output for several hours with swelling of the face, fingers, ankles or feet
  • Severe abdominal, back or side pain plus any of the following: fever, painful, frequent, urgent urination with or without cloudy, odorous or bloody urine, vaginal discharge, nausea or vomiting
  • Palpitations, visual changes, headache, fatigue, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, swelling

  • infections of the urinary tract are the most common bacterial infections experienced during pregnancy
  • consult with Health Care Provider before taking any over-the-counter (OTC) medication during pregnancy
  • pregnancy changes the structure of the organs of the urinary system, which causes an increased risk for bladder and kidney infections
  • complications of kidney problems during pregnancy include preterm labor and low birthweight babies
  • urinary frequency is very common during the 1st and 3rd trimesters as the growing uterus presses on the bladder

    Self-Management - You can help in the following ways:
    • increase fluids to 10-12 8 oz. glasses (water, cranberry, and apple juice)
    • empty bladder completely when there is the urge to urinate
    • take acetaminophen (Tylenol) to reduce fever, after consultation with Health Care Provider
    • apply heat to lower back or abdomen
    • empty bladder completely before and after sexual intercourse
    • avoid bubble baths, deodorant feminine hygiene products and caffeinated beverages
    • wipe from front to back after a bowel movement
    • cleanse vaginal area with soap and water
    • wear cotton underwear and unrestrictive clothing
